Who’s Your Spotter?

In the course of your day and the activities you participate in, who is your spotter? Think about weightlifting, backing a trailer into a tight space, or just driving on the freeway. Some Christians don’t realize they have a ever-present spotter, and fewer utilize Him for their daily tasks.

Recently my wife and I went camping at an RV park. This was the first time we had camped there, and we weren’t familiar with the layout of the sites. So my wife went outside to help me back the camper, and we got on the phone to talk through the procedure. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to back a large motorhome by yourself – constantly checking to see how close you are to each obstacle. Even with backup cameras, they are usually wide-angle and distort the distances to objects. And for some reason RV park owners place large boulders around the site – most likely to keep people off the grass and maybe for landscaping. Anyway, it was simple to back into the site when my wife was guiding me and notifying me about close objects, like rocks, poles, water / electric connections, and the picnic table.

Similarly we have the Holy Spirit as our guide or “spotter” in life. We believe that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit comprise the triune God, three in one. What the Father said in the Old Testament, and what Jesus said in the New Testament, can be extended to what the Holy Spirit is doing today. God does not change (Malachi 3:6, Matthew 24:35). Consider the word of the Lord to Joshua in Joshua 1:5b and Joshua 1:9b:

…Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you. I will not fail you or forsake you. (Joshua 1:5b NASB95)

…Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9b NASB95)

Please don’t think those promises were only for Joshua and the Israelites. Look in the New Testament at what Jesus said to the disciples in Matthew 28:20b:

…and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20b NASB95)

Finally, look at how Jesus described the Holy Spirit in John 14:26 and John 16:13:

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. (John 14:26 NASB95)

But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. (John 16:13 NASB95)

I know there are many Bible verses in this message for you to reference, but I want to show you that Christians should lean on the Holy Spirit (and therefore the Father) for all guidance, teaching, and truth. He is your Spotter in every situation. Use Him and see how your life improves!

God is love. So above all else, let love be the beautiful prize for which you run (1 Corinthians 13:13 TPT). Jesus is Lord.
