Work Heartily for the Lord Christ

If you’re a Christian, you have one boss – the Lord Jesus Christ. Your boss is not the manager or team lead where you work. I wrote an article about that: Who’s Your Boss? But now let’s consider another of Paul’s epistles, Colossians, and what he wrote in Colossians 3:23-24:

Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. (Colossians 3:23-24 italics mine)

The first thing we see is that we are to work heartily – not reluctantly, not dishonest, not skipping out early, etc… Second, we see that we work for the Lord and not men, and that we receive a reward – eternal life in heaven. That reward is better than any salary, bonus or even Super Bowl tickets.

Now consider the opposite end of the spectrum spelled out in detail in Deuteronomy 28:47-48. Frankly, this is scary:

Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and a glad heart, for the abundance of all things; therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in the lack of all things; and He will put an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you. (Deuteronomy 28:47-48 emphasis mine)

Let’s just jump to the end first! The end of verse 48 states He (the Lord) will put an iron yoke on your neck and destroy you. What? Why would He do such a thing? It states at the beginning that you did not serve the Lord with joy and a glad heart. The middle of the passage gives details about how He will destroy you – serving your enemies in hunger, thirst, nakedness and the lack of all things, even saddled with an iron yoke. That sounds very clear to me and I don’t want any of that!

I don’t want to focus on the negative aspects of Deuteronomy (there actually are a list of blessings in Deuteronomy 28:1-14). I want our minds to be set on the Lord Christ. We should focus on Him, not men, and have a joyful & glad heart always! So when you go to work or whatever you do, think about whom you serve.

God is love. So above all else, let love be the beautiful prize for which you run (1 Corinthians 13:13 TPT). Jesus is Lord.
