In John 10:1-18, Jesus calls Himself a shepherd, specifically the good shepherd. He explains some things that He does for His flock. Most people do not have a livestock background (including me), so it’s difficult to think about everything that a shepherd does. A shepherd not only provides food, water, and bedding for the sheep, but also protects them from enemies, guides them to safe pastures, and rehabilitates any injury/illness. The sheep trust the shepherd unconditionally.
We see in v14 Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me.” In v4 we see that Jesus goes before the sheep, and we should expect that Christians know Him and follow Him because they know His voice. How can we follow someone we can’t see unless we hear his voice? So He goes before us and shows us the path to walk on – He’s our example. John 14:12 states that we will do the same works Jesus did, and even greater works (if we believe in Him). This is a powerful promise. But again, Jesus the good shepherd has gone before us and has shown us where to go and what to do. We just need to follow His voice. Listen for His voice today!
God is love. So above all else, let love be the beautiful prize for which you run (1 Corinthians 13:13 TPT). Jesus is Lord.
