You Will Be Free Indeed

Today let’s take a look at John 8:30-36 and the story of Jesus talking to many new believers. Jesus was in the middle of a discourse with the disciples, probably the Pharisees & scribes, and a crowd of people. It was just after the Feast of Booths (John 7:37), and Jesus was teaching in the temple.

Many came to believe in Him as He spoke (John 8:30), and He gave those believers a golden nugget of wisdom that we should accept.

31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you abide in My word, [then] you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” [Jhn 8:31-32 NASB95]

This is a conditional statement given by Jesus, a zero conditional according to grammarly (it is a fact or general truth). Jesus says if you abide (live and dwell) in His word, then you are truly His disciples AND you will know the truth – a truth that will make you free. What a profound statement. We are His disciples in reality if we live and dwell in His word. And by dwelling in His word we will be free – and know the truth to boot. Jesus works His freedom in our life through His truth.

And notice that Jesus says the same thing again in verse 36:

36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. [Jhn 8:36 NASB95]

We are free indeed! Don’t ever think you are in bondage – in Jesus you are free!! Take some time and ponder all that Jesus has done for you – and receive His blessings. Do a word study looking for all the references in Scripture: “in Him” and “in Christ” as a start. Then abide in His word and thank Him for everything!

God is love. So above all else, let love be the beautiful prize for which you run (1 Corinthians 13:13 TPT). Jesus is Lord.
